Creating a Language
Peterson started working with HBO’s franchise back in 2009, when he was first recruited to create a complete language based on the Dothraki phrases included by George R. R. Martin in his books. The course is targeting Game of Thrones fanatics from all over the world who are interested in learning the language spoken by Khal Drogo.
A Typical Language Course
Peterson’s Dothraki dictionary has over 500 words and phrases, many of which have been created for the Dothraki course’s specific purpose. The course will be structured similarly to any other language course, with emphasis on vocabulary and grammar learning, as well as on pronunciation. The course will also include information about the fictional cultural background of the Dothraki people and recommendations on what to do and what to avoid when addressing them. The recommendations and background information include, for example, statements referring to the central position occupied by horses in Dothraki culture and the fact that several vocabulary items and phrases derive from equestrian terms. According to Peterson himself, the audio samples will help all students perfect their pronunciation.
The courses and course material will be released in two different versions, differing in price. The first version includes a guide and a CD which include learning material for 200 words and phrases. The second version includes a guide and CD covering a total of 500 words and phrases, as well as online quizzes and games. The mobile app will be sold separately through the App Store and will only be available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. This will consist of 15 flash card decks to accompany language learning. A sample lesson is already available online on the Living Language website.
