English has long been the language of the Internet, with a vast majority of websites and general content being written in the language. Russian comes second in the list with around 5.9% of webpages written in this tongue and following close behind comes German, which used to be second and has been recently overtaken by the Russian language.
Other Internet Languages
Following the first three places, 4.7% of webpages are written in Spanish, 4.5% written in French and 4.4% written in Chinese. These percentages show a great amount of webpages which are not written in English, even though English works as the lingua franca through which many users communicate. Out of the 1,000 most popular webpages on the Internet, only six are in Russian, and many are written in Chinese, German, Japanese and even French. This shows a considerable mismatch or variation between users and content.
This latest information have an impact in the translation business. It means an increased demand on localization of websites.
