Everyone’s life around the world has been touched by rock and roll. Love it or hate it, it’s here to stay.
This American born musical genre is one of the most important cultural contributions of America to the world. Not only did it change the way music was played, it influenced the way peopled dressed, thought, acted, talked, danced and lived.
From Rock and Roll, words such as baby, Big Daddy, blast (good time), crazy (good things) and bug (bothersome) are used. It has shaped lives and careers, changed fortunes and economies, been used as a form of self-expression and artistry and influenced cultures. Today, it is a multi-billion dollar industry.
Rock and Roll has transcended into just being a genre of music, it has become an attitude, or a way of life.
Southern roots
We normally think of the South as giving rise to country music, but it is also the birthplace of Rock and Roll. Just like Jazz music and other musical genres, Rock and Roll is the result of various musical styles, including African and European influences, as well as rhythm and blues, country, jazz, folk and gospel music.
Former slaves who settled in urbanized areas such as Memphis, Detroit and New York City brought with them their music resulting in a cultural collision, proving that when people come together and appreciate each other’s differences, there is much to be gained.
How Rock and Roll Spread
Technological advancements in the music industry helped shape Rock and Roll. The musical notes once played on the piano are now being played on the electric guitar, giving Rock and Roll its sound.
A number of factors helped shape Rock and Roll to become THE music of the times. After World War II, there was an economic boom, which helped make teens into an economic sector. Teens had more discretionary money and time, which they used to buy records and concert tickets.
The birth of television also helped popularize many bands, most notably the show American Bandstand. Many entrepreneurs also put up their own music labels, helping bring various talents to the limelight.
By the 1950s, Rock and Roll hit the streets and took the world by storm.
Baby Boomers Love Rock and Roll
Much to the dismay of their parents, teens from well to do families took to Rock and Roll. From urban America, rock and roll spread to the rest of the world, thanks to the worldwide hit, Rock Around the Clock by Bill Haley & His Comets.
The music exemplified attitude and defiance and served as a reflection of the changing world. It was the perfect form of self-expression for any teen anywhere in the world.
Rock and Roll Greats
Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley are some of the early trendsetters of this musical genre.
Great musicians influenced the work of others and in Rock and Roll. Buddy Holly’s work influenced the British group, The Beatles. Today’s talents, including Gwen Stefani, Bruno Mars, Muse and Coldplay pay deference to the musical greats before them.
Rock and Roll will continue to evolve yet remain timeless, making it the genre of each new generation.
