These days, pop culture phenomena sprout like mushrooms—before you know it, a new pop culture craze has been born. For instance, just two years ago, the word “selfie” was not even recognized, but today almost everybody takes them. Memes, viral videos and many other online gimmicks have paved the way for the rapid rise of cultural fads. Among the “cultural mushrooms” that have been gaining ground recently is “hipster photography.” The term might not sound appealing, but it is a cultural phenomenon that has attracted many followers.

What is Hipster Photography?

Many people think that it is just photography by hipsters, or images in which hipsters are the subjects, but neither is the case. Hipsters form a subculture of their own and, despite the fact that many people are not fans of hipsters, hipster photography is different. It shares some characteristics with hipsters, but the photographic subjects are portrayed in a more artistic way.
The basic focus of hipster photography is the invocation of freedom and carelessness. This is why most of the subjects in hipster photos are laughing or having a good time—they seem unaffected by what is happening in the outside world. The overall appeal of the photos comes from their light and carefree nature, and they are also very colorful.

How to Take Hipster Photos

There are different ways to take a creative hipster photo. For example, the subject can be a gathering of different people who are really having fun. Their clothes are light-colored and the reactions are all candid. Some photos use clothing to show the freedom of the subjects, while other photos include semi-nude subjects as an expression of freedom; sometimes the subjects appear very metrosexual.
Hipster photography is often used to express what people stand for. Therefore, you will see tattooed people taking lots of hipster photos, as well as those who are fighting for homosexuality or against domestic violence. As long as the photo depicts freedom and being carefree, then it is hipster photography.
