Interpreting FAQs: Important Information you need to know about Professional Interpreting.
1. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING?
Translation is the conversion of text (written language) from one language (source language) into another (target language). The “target text,” or “translation” communicates the same message. Interpreting is the intellectual activity that consists of facilitating oral or sign language communication, either simultaneously or consecutively, between more speakers who are not speaking, or signing, the same language.
2. WHAT LANGUAGES DO YOU SERVICE?
Day Translations offers expert interpreting services in over 100 languages and dialects, from A to Z, from Afrikaans to Zulu, including European, Asian, African languages and so on. Please see the list of languages that we translate and interpret. We offer professional translation and interpreting services from and into most of international languages.
3. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SIMULTANEOUS AND CONSECUTIVE INTERPRETATION? WHAT IS SIGHT TRANSLATION?
Simultaneous interpretation (also known as conference interpretation, real-time interpreting) is when the speaker’s voice is interpreted without interruption as he/she is speaking. The interpreter listens to one language and speaks in another, simultaneously, the two voices speaking at once. Research has shown that 23 cognitive skills are involved in simultaneous interpreting. Simultaneous interpretation usually requires specific sound equipment.
In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter waits until the speaker completes an idea (a passage of speech, a sentence, a shorter part of a speech, logical unit) and translates it into the foreign language Therefore, consecutive interpretation requires pauses between passages for the interpretation to be spoken. First the interpreter listens to the entire phrase then she/he interprets it into the desired language.
Sight translation is an oral translation of a written text.
4. WHY DO INTERPRETERS WORK IN TEAMS DURING COMPLEX PROCEEDINGS?
The interpreting sessions are physically and mentally taxing. The use of a team ensures that interpreters can take turns to avoid fatigue. Studies have shown that all interpreters, no matter how experienced or competent, suffer the effects of mental fatigue after about 30 minutes of continuous interpreting. The use of a team ensures that interpreters can take turns to avoid fatigue and ensure accuracy. For these reasons many international agencies, including the United Nations and the European Commission, require rotation of interpreters every 30 minutes.
